Regular Session

Town Council

June 07, 2016

The Regular Session of Town Council was called to order by Mayor Leigh Stoddart at 7:00pm with Councillors Rex Stoddard, Sherry Atkinson, Trudy Quinlan, Irene Baker, and Cecil Brannen present.   Councillor Russell Atkinson was absent.

 

ADDITIONS TO THE AGENDA

 

            a)  Boardwalk Railing

                        After a lengthy discussion, Council felt that the people of the Town should have a say in whether a railing would be an asset on the ocean side of the boardwalk.

          

APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA:

 

            It was moved by Councillor Brannen and seconded by Councillor Quinlan to approve the agenda, as well as the additions, as circulated.  Motion carried.

 

APPROVAL OF THE PREVIOUS MINUTES:

 

            It was moved by Councillor Stoddard and seconded by Councillor Quinlan to approve the previous minutes.  Motion carried.

 

APPOINTMENTS:   

                        Doug Drane/Redding CA – Doug Drane of Redding CA was present to present to Council the Draft Financial Statements for the 2015/2016 fiscal year.  It was moved by Councillor Quinlan and seconded by Councillor Brannen that the draft statements be accepted as presented.  Motion carried.

 

MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES: 

 

            a) Library – Computer/Office Chairs (Dec 2015 minutes)

                        This was discussed at length and it was decided that when it was necessary, then new chairs would be purchased.  The one that was broken was easily repaired.

REPORTS

 

Streets, Sewers and Unsightly Premises:  The monthly report was read and discussed.

 

Recreation:  There was no recreation report available at this time.

 

Building Inspectors Report:

            The building permit report for May 2016 was presented.  There was one permit issued in the amount of $5 000, and one demolition permit issued to Sea Star Seafoods for the demolition of the old Stoddard building.

 

Fire:  There was no Fire report available.

 

Police:  There was no Police report available.

 

Mayor/Councillors:  Councillor Quinlan reported on a SASI meeting she had attended.  She reported that SASI had purchased the old TimBar Mart building in Shelburne in which they will conduct their regular business.

There will be an annual general meeting on June 29 2016 at the Osprey at 6:30pm.

 

Mayor Stoddart received an invitation to a Garden Party at the Government House in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday.  Unfortunately, Mayor Stoddart will be unable to attend as he will be away at that time.

 

Mayor Stoddart also received a thank you letter from the Western Region Library in appreciation of the Town’s donation to the ‘adopt a book’ campaign.

 

Councillor Baker attended a Shelburne County Tourism Association meeting and gave an update on the Association.

 

Mayor Stoddart attended the opening ceremonies of the annual Lobster Festival.

 

Councillors’ Baker and Brannen, along with Mayor Stoddart attended the RCMP/CAO meet and greet that was held at the Barrington tourist bureau this past month.

CORRESPONDENCE

 

a)  UNSM –Fort McMurray Support:

            UNSM volunteered to collect any financial contributions that any municipality may make, and forward them to the appropriate authorities, in regard to the Fort McMurray forest fire disaster.

            After much discussion, Councillor S. Atkinson motioned that we do not contribute at this time, Councillor Brannen seconded this motion, motion carried.

 

b) Roseway Student Sponsorship Program:

            A request was received from the Shelburne County Health Care Professional Recruitment and Retention Committee on behalf of the Roseway Student Sponsorship Program asking for the Town’s participation in the next term of this program.  Based on population, the Town’s share would be $342.00.  The clerk was instructed to contact them to see what became of the $300.00 that was sent to them in January.

          

NEW BUSINESS

 

            a)  NSCC Closing Ceremonies:

                        Mayor Stoddart will be attending, on behalf of the Town, the convocation at the NSCC on June 8 2016, at 4pm.  This event is to be held at the Community Centre on King Street in Shelburne.

 

            b)  BMHS Graduation Ceremonies:

                        Councillor Quinlan will be attending, on behalf of the Town, the graduation ceremonies at BMHS.  The Graduation will be held on June 28th 2016 at the Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena, Sherose Island.

 


 

At 9:35pm, and there being no other business to discuss, Councillor Baker motioned to adjourn.
